Environmental/Sustainability
At Boscov's, we are committed to reducing our impact on the environment. Ourentire organization is challenged to achieve day-by-day improvement in key environmental areas:
- Recycling and waste management
- Energy use and conservation
- Sustainability
Recycling and Waste Management
We are recycling in every part of our business and in 2012 recycled over 13 million pounds (73% of all) of our waste materials. This is a 5% increase from 2011.
Energy conservation
In 2012, Boscov.s reduced its energy consumption by over 2.6 million KWHs by focusing on 3 energy strategies: Solar, New Technologies and Conservation.
In our Vineland, NJ store, over 60% of our power requirements come from a roof-top solar array that we installed in 2011. That installation saves over 1.3 million KWHs a year in just one store. We have plans for two more solar installations, one in Delaware and one in Maryland. In addition, we are in the early stages of planning two future solar installations in New York.
Using the latest technologies, we have begun to replace incandescent lighting in our stores with LED lamps. We upgraded 2,500 fixtures in 2012 for a yearly savings of 295,000 KWHs. In 2013, we will replace an additional 3,500 fixtures to add another 640,000 KWHs yearly savings. That.s over 900,000 KWHs saved in two years.
In our stores and office areas, we have starting saving another 400,000 KWHs a month by using Smart Technologies to match our energy use with our environmental and comfort needs.
Sustainability
At Boscov.s we are also committed to environmental sustainability in every area. By focusing on what we do every day, we have achieved significant additional reductions in our impact on our environment.
In our e-commerce business, we optimized our packaging needs to our shipment profile cutting our overall needs by 37%. We cut the number of box types we use by 80%, eliminating waste.
We also re-purpose packing materials from our incoming shipments to use in our out-going shipments.
Boscov.s is committed to increasing the use of re-cycled paper in its printed advertising materials.
In 2013, Boscov.s will be moving toward a paperless business environment in several areas: Paperless paychecks for our co-workers, e-mailed receipts for our customers and we are planning a significant reduction in printed operational reports with the introduction of several new business management systems.
